They are benign skin lesions caused by a cluster of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) or blood vessels. The average adult has between 10 and 40 of these spots.  <\/p><p>But not all moles are the same. They differ in color, shape, depth, and origin.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46b48de elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"46b48de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Classic Pigmented Lesions (Melanocytic Nevi)<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-099d63b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"099d63b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These moles are caused by the proliferation of melanocytes, the cells responsible for our skin&#8217;s tanning. Depending on which layer of the skin the cells are located in, there are three main types: <\/p><p><strong>Junctional nevus:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><em>Appearance:<\/em> Flat, sharply defined, usually dark brown to black.<\/li><li><em>Location:<\/em> Pigment cells are located in the outermost layer of the epidermis.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Compound nevus (mixed type):<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><em>Appearance:<\/em> Slightly raised, usually an even brown color, sometimes with a slightly rough surface.<\/li><li><em>Location:<\/em> The cells are located in both the upper dermis and the underlying dermis.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Dermal nevus (true birthmark):<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><em>Appearance:<\/em> Distinctly raised, knot- or button-like, often skin-colored to light brown. Small hairs often grow from them. <\/li><li><em>Location:<\/em> The pigment cells are located deep within the dermis.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-57e59af elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"57e59af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Special and Atypical Forms<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a22251c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a22251c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Some moles differ from the typical appearance. They often require a little more attention: <\/p><p><strong>Atypical \/ Dysplastic Nevus:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>These lesions are usually larger than 5 mm, irregular in shape, and multicolored (a mixture of brown, red, and pink hues). Although they are benign, they are considered an indicator of an <strong>increased risk of skin cancer<\/strong> and should be checked regularly by a doctor. <\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Halo nevus (Sutton nevus):<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>A brown birthmark surrounded by a <strong>white, depigmented ring<\/strong>. In this case, the body&#8217;s own immune system is trying to break down the pigment cells. The birthmark often fades on its own over time.  <\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Blue nevus:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>A small, firm nodule that is blue-gray or blue-black in color. The unusual color is caused by the deep location of the pigment cells in the skin, which refract light differently. <\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Congenital nevus (birthmark):<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>These birthmarks are present at birth or develop shortly thereafter. However, some types of moles\u2014or new moles that appear on the skin\u2014can develop into malignant lesions. The simple <strong>ABCDE rule<\/strong> can help you check your moles yourself:  <\/p><ul><li><strong>Asymmetry<\/strong>: The birthmark is not a uniform circle or oval.<\/li><li><strong>Border<\/strong>: The edges are blurred, jagged, or frayed.<\/li><li><strong>Color<\/strong>: The spot has different shades (e.g., brown, black, reddish).<\/li><li><strong>Diameter<\/strong>: The birthmark is larger than 5 mm.<\/li><li><strong>Development<\/strong>: It changes in shape, size, or color, or starts to itch or
