What Our Patients Say About Us

Laser Scar Removal in Frankfurt

If you’re considering laser treatment for scars, the fractional laser (Fraxel laser / erbium:YAG laser) is the gold standard. At our dermatology practice in Frankfurt am Main, we use fractional laser technology to gradually remove altered scar tissue and stimulate the body’s own collagen production deep within the dermis.

What types of scars can be treated with a laser?

The fractional laser is suitable for a wide variety of scars on the face and throughout the body:

  • Acne scars (atrophic scars): Indentations or bowl-shaped depressions on the face that remain after acne has healed. The laser stimulates tissue regeneration from within.
  • Surgical and accident scars: Raised, hardened, or irregular wound edges are gradually smoothed out and blended in color with the surrounding tissue.
  • Hypertrophic scars: Raised tissue that has formed following inflammation or cuts is gently smoothed out.
  • Stretch Marks and Pregnancy Stretch Marks: Microstimulation firms up the connective tissue and makes fine tears in the subcutaneous tissue less noticeable

Benefits of Laser Scar Correction

  • High effectiveness: The first improvements in skin texture are often visible after just the first session.
  • Minimal downtime: Thanks to the fractional principle, the skin regenerates faster than with full-surface lasers.
  • Long-term tissue regeneration: Collagen production continues for weeks and months after treatment.
  • Specialized Medical Expertise: Procedures performed by experienced dermatologists using state-of-the-art medical technology.

How does the Fraxel laser treat scars?

Unlike older, ablative laser systems, fractional laser therapy (skin resurfacing) targets specific areas and is gentle on the tissue:

  • Microscopic light pulses: The laser creates thousands of microscopic treatment columns in the skin.
  • Collagen and Elastin Production: Thermal stimulation penetrates deep into the dermis. There, it contracts the existing tissue and stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. • Result: Deep acne scars gradually become less pronounced, raised scar tissue flattens, and the skin’s surface becomes more elastic and even.

The Scar Correction Procedure at Our Frankfurt Practice

The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis and generally does not require any time off work.
  1. Comprehensive Skin Analysis & Consultation Before your first laser session, we examine the condition of your skin as well as the depth and structure of your scars. We provide a realistic assessment of how well the scar tissue can be made to blend in with the surrounding skin and create a personalized treatment plan.
  2. The laser session Application: The area is precisely scanned with the handpiece. You will only feel a slight tingling or a brief sensation of warmth. Cooling: Immediately after the procedure, the skin is cooled and treated with a soothing ointment.
  3. Recovery & Aftercare After the treatment, the skin may appear slightly red and slightly swollen (similar to a mild sunburn). After a few days, a fine, barely visible scab will form, which will fall off on its own.
Important: For about 4 to 6 weeks after each laser session, avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds, and consistently use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF 50+) to prevent changes in skin pigmentation.

What are the risks associated with laser scar treatment?

Fractional laser therapy is a proven and generally very safe method for scar correction. However, because micro-injuries are intentionally created in the deep layers of the skin to stimulate the regeneration process, temporary skin reactions are completely normal and part of the natural healing process.

Normal and Temporary Reactions

  • Redness and swelling: Immediately after the laser treatment, the skin reacts similarly to a mild to moderate sunburn. These symptoms usually subside on their own within 2 to 4 days.
  • Dryness and fine flaking: After a few days, the outermost layer of skin begins to flake off in microscopically fine scales. This causes a slight feeling of tightness, which can be easily relieved with moisturizing ointments.

Rare Side Effects

  • Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin): If the treated skin is not adequately protected from UV radiation after the session, increased pigmentation may occur. Prevention: Consistent use of sunscreen with SPF 50+ for at least 4–6 weeks.
  • Hypopigmentation (skin lightening): In very dark skin types or when the dose is too high, a slight, usually temporary lightening of the treated area may occur in rare cases.
  • Wound-healing complications: Failure to follow post-treatment care instructions (e.g., prematurely picking at the scab) can impair healing and lead to scarring.

By conducting a thorough preliminary assessment of your skin type and precisely adjusting the laser settings, we minimize the risk of complications.
